Surviving Sleep Regression

As a doula, one of the most common concerns we hear from new parents are about sleep regression. It can be a bewildering and exhausting time — but understanding what sleep regression is, why it happens, and how to manage it can make a significant difference. 

What is Sleep Regression?

Sleep regression is a period that typically lasts between 2 to 6 weeks, during which, a baby who has been sleeping well suddenly begins waking up frequently during the night and has trouble settling down for naps. 

It’s like your baby suddenly decided to join an all-night rave without telling you. You feel like you’ve finally gotten into a great routine but suddenly you’ve gone from sleep schedules to party schedules, and unfortunately, you’re the one hosting.

Why Does Sleep Regression Happen?

Sleep regression is often linked to various developmental milestones. As babies grow, their brains and bodies are constantly evolving, and these changes can temporarily disrupt their sleep patterns. Here are some common reasons why sleep regression occurs:

  1. Developmental Milestones: 

    As babies learn new skills like rolling over, crawling, or standing, their excitement and practice of these new abilities can interfere with sleep. It’s like their brain is saying, “Why sleep when you can practice your new somersaults at 3 AM?”

  2. Cognitive Leaps:

     Major cognitive developments like increased awareness of their surroundings and new social skills, can also disrupt sleep as babies process these changes. They’re basically having an existential crisis, pondering the meaning of peek-a-boo at 2 AM. Well not really, but you get it. 

  3. Growth Spurts: 

    Rapid growth spurts can increase hunger, causing babies to wake up more frequently to feed. It’s like they’re training for a food-eating competition and need the extra -practice. 

  4. Teething: 

    The discomfort from teething can make it harder for babies to stay asleep. Imagine trying to sleep while sprouting teeth — sounds fun, right?


When Does Sleep Regression Happen?

While every baby is unique, sleep regressions tend to occur around predictable ages:

  • 4 Months: Often considered the most challenging, as it marks a significant shift in sleep cycles and the eruption of baby teeth! Welcome to the four-month sleep regression, where your baby decides sleep is for the weak.

  • 8-10 Months: This period aligns with major physical milestones like crawling and standing. Your baby just discovered mobility and wants to practice escaping the crib at all hours.

  • 12 Months: A time of even more mobility and exploration. Your baby may now be waving, mimicking sounds, maybe even walking!

  • 18 Months: Often associated with increased independence and possibly the transition to one nap.

  • 2 Years: Linked to significant cognitive and language development. They’re probably up late rehearsing their first TED Talk.
